PRADA? …Really?

Prada SS-2011

The Met has announced Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli as subjects of The MET’s next major exhibit coming May 2012.  Curators from The Costume Institute are looking to duplicate the success of Alexander McQueen’s ‘Savage Beauty’ exhibit, which brought to the museum a record breaking number of visitors and more than $13 million in revenue.

Miuccia inherited creative direction of the luxury goods company from her grandfather in 1973, and has been quoted as establishing fashion’s “ugly chic” look of the 90’s.  Prada has since maintained an androgynous, sporty edge about it.  Say what you will about the questionable fashion decisions of decades past; we live and we learn. (And hope not to relive… -right?)  Gladly, Miu Miu, Prada’s sister label will also be present in the exhibit; offering a softer, more ornate balance to Prada’s historical look.

The other half of the exhibit will chronicle the the life and work of Italian designer Schiaparelli, who died in 1973.  She was considered the “queen of surrealist fashion” and collaborated with artists such as Salvador Dalí and Alberto Giacometti.  She was also known to have been a great rival of the infamous Coco Chanel.  Schiaparelli is legendary in the fashion community, and is best known for her Crab Lobster Dress, (Left) and High Heel Hat, (Right.)   (I wonder if any palms were greased during this selection process…?)

Now, don’t get me wrong, I would never underestimate the contribution of Prada’s label to the wonderful world of fashion!  I particularly like their bags, -and every gay man in America is owner of their shoes!   Neither is it my intention to discredit the contribution and legacy of Schiaparelli; -I mean, the name itself screams haute!   I have also seen and loved many works inspired by her and her career.  -I just don’t quite see the value of making any special effort to patronize this exhibit.  And, how on earth could they choose this to follow such extraordinary ART as seen in ‘Savage Beauty??’  If you missed the post on Alexander McQueen’s ‘Savage Beauty,’ exhibit, it’s a must see!!

Now, YOU compare!  -Don’t worry, i’ll wait….

…And this is two, against one!!  I suppose there is still some hope for a pleasant surprise; -A special, “Devil Wears…” selection?? -Or, maybe i’ll just wait until 2013; I’d rather stay home and watch the movie anyway.
